The model for this painting commissioned it as a gift for her boyfriend. We worked from several live modeling sessions in my studio to complete this painting. When she came to me with the commission she was not sure what she wanted the pose or lighting to be in the final work, however she knew that the theme should be sensual and tasteful. I suggested a reclined pose, and showed her several classical, as well as contemporary examples on this pose. After introducing her to many ideas for a reclining pose I began to understand what type of paintings she was most attracted to. I sketched out a few different ideas that I thought would be flattering to her and we decided on this composition.
With this painting I wanted to create a bold composition that also represented my client's desires. The diagonal pose moves the viewer's eye across the painting and the drapery swirls the eye back through. The pale-warm flesh of the sitter is invitingly contrasted by the cool dark background. This lust filled theme is playfully suggested with reference to John S. Sergant's most famous painting, while still leaving the model partially covered up.
