This painting was painted from a live model over several sittings. Up to this point in the artist's career his mark making was an important visual part of the final painting. It was important for the artist to have the viewer see active brush-marks and impasto on the surface of the canvas. With this piece his focus was to be more controlled. The artist started with an imprematura and simple charcoal line drawing, then when right into full color with the oil paint. His technique was still direct, but the marks were more subtle. Working on rendering form was the goal of this painting.
